2023 CALGARY FRINGE FESTIVAL

Fri Aug 4 to Sat Aug 12, 2023

We are offering a hybrid Festival experience between LIVE in-person performances and DIGITAL offerings (Theatre On Demand digital presentations of select in-person performances):

  • Fringe Managed Venue (Lottery Drawn artists) receive a minimum 6 guaranteed performances over the 9 day Festival, with full venue and technical services provided. Venues are assigned per show technical requirements. All participating artists are selected by lottery draw.

  • Artist Managed Venue (First Come, First Served artists) perform in found venue spaces with show dates and times as determined by the venue and the artist. The Calgary Fringe typically sources out these found venue spaces within the Fringe Festival area (Inglewood/Downtown Calgary), then offers these spaces to artists who did not make the lottery draw on a first come, first served basis. Artists are responsible for all venue and technical services in these venues.

As a proud member of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF), we ensure that 100% of the base ticket price (excluding ticketing surcharges and government taxes) goes into the pockets of its artists. We are committed to giving artists the opportunity to produce work in an inclusive, engaging and highly accessible environment. We are an open access theatre arts festival where participants are drawn through a fair lottery process or first come, first served basis. Performances can be anywhere from 40 minutes in length to a maximum of 70 minutes.

By operating from an intentionally uncurated model, we remove the traditional gatekeepers from our process of presenting art. The notion of artistic excellence is subjective and culturally specific; by creating an open access platform we elevate work by artists with backgrounds or artistic practices that are not adequately supported by mainstream artistic institutions.

The only constraints on material or content are for the consideration of legality, and the health and safety of all those involved, including artists, staff, volunteers, and audiences. The Calgary Fringe reserves the right to enforce any necessary measures as needed to ensure a fun event for all.

What else FMV and AMV artists get from us

  • Professional Development Workshops in the months leading into the Festival.

  • Box office/Front of House services.

  • Billet accommodations for traveling artists, when available.

  • Overall festival marketing.

What artists are responsible for

  • Production and marketing of their own shows.

The Calgary Fringe considers itself a BOUTIQUE FRINGE FESTIVAL and is sandwiched between the Winnipeg Fringe and Edmonton Fringe Festivals on the CAFF touring circuit.

The complete Calgary Fringe Festival Show Schedule will be posted in June with tickets going on sale July 1, 2023.
